SFAS Scholars Program
The primary purpose of the San Francisco Aeronautical Society is the preservation of aviation history. In recognition of the historical contributions made in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Aeronautical Society is pleased to continue its' SFAS Scholars Program. The scholarship program is designed for accredited public or non public high school seniors who seek a degree from an accredited post secondary institution, students currently attending schools in San Francisco county and San Mateo county may apply. Applicants must anticipate completion of a high school diploma at the time of application, plan to pursue a degree at an accredited post secondary institution and carry a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. at the end of their junior year of high school through graduation. Applicants must submit a completed application, a copy of their official transcript and a written essay on the topic of “What is SFO’s role in the economic development of the Bay Area and beyond? ” that includes a title and by line; word count of between 2,500 to 5,000 words; footnotes as required; and a bibliography listing all sources. Also must include a 250-300 word personal statement which expresses the applicant’s personal interest in aviation. Use of the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum for research is encouraged.
The scholarship program is designed to encourage applicants to think beyond just the topic itself and to expand their essay to include personal commentary, such as going beyond aviation’s impact on the past and projecting it to today and the future. It is equally important that applicants express their own ideas and not just repeat the work of others as plagiarism or unidentified content will result in a disqualification.
In Spring of 2019 the San Francisco Aeronautical Society will award one first place scholarship of up to $25,000, and a second place scholarship of $5,000.

Notification/Additional Information
- All applicants will be notified with an email between April 1 and April 15, 2019. All winning essays of the SFAS Scholars Program Scholarship will be published in the San Francisco Aeronautical Society’s Newsletter, FAM14 and are the property of SFAS.
- Winners must submit a copy of post secondary institution registration/acceptance prior to issuance of check.
